Elaeagnus pungens – The Elegant Resilience of the Outdoor Bonsai
A 7-year-old outdoor bonsai, hardy and refined in appearance. Elaeagnus pungens, known as oleaster or thorny olive, is appreciated for its leathery leaves with their characteristic silvery sheen and its small white flowers with an intense fragrance, which can perfume the autumn air. A robust species, also ideal for those approaching the world of bonsai for the first time.

Interesting facts
Elaeagnus pungens is an extraordinarily adaptable species: it tolerates wind, drought, and even poor soils. As a bonsai, its rough bark and two-toned leaves (dark green on top, silvery underneath) create a highly striking visual contrast.
Position
It prefers a bright outdoor position, in full sun or partial shade. It tolerates winter cold well; protect it only in the event of prolonged, severe frost.
Watering
Moderate and regular: allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter, avoiding waterlogging.
Fertilization
From spring to autumn, use the organic-mineral fertilizer Hiryo Gold or the fast-acting fertilizer Nutribonsai. Stop fertilizing in midsummer on the hottest days and during the winter dormancy period.
Repotting
Every 2–3 years, in spring before the start of new growth. After repotting, it is recommended to water with Mistral Bonsai’s Vitabonsai revitalizer to help the plant recover.
Substrate
Terrabonsai – a special bonsai substrate that meets water and nutritional needs, promoting root development and overall vigor. Alternatively: 60% Kiryuzuna + 40% Akadama, which promotes growth but requires more frequent watering.
Pinching
When the shoot has reached 4–6 pairs of leaves, cut it back, leaving 1–2 pairs. Preferably carry this out in spring and early summer.
Wiring
Can be carried out all year round; take care in spring, when growth is faster, to prevent marks on the bark.
