How to care for your terrarium
How to care for your Terrarium
Our guidelines for helping it grow healthy and strong
The terrarium is a small green oasis that brings a touch of nature into our homes. Originating from miniature cultivation techniques, the terrarium is a microenvironment that can host tropical foliage plants or cacti and succulents. At our nursery, we have chosen to offer a variety of terrariums to suit every taste and setting.
Where to place it
Place your terrarium in a bright room, but away from direct sunlight. The glass amplifies heat, and the leaves inside can burn within a few hours. An east- or north-facing window is perfect; a south-facing window is fine if the terrarium is 1–2 meters away.
How to maintain humidity
Humidity is essential for the well-being of the plants in the terrarium. Observe the inner walls: if they are fogged up, the humidity is correct. If the glass is completely dry, add 2–3 sprays of room-temperature water with a mister. If, on the other hand, water is dripping heavily, open the lid (if closed) for 24 hours. Mist the substrate directly with low-limescale water, avoiding pouring water over it to prevent waterlogging.
Ideal temperature
The terrarium thrives in an environment with temperatures between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius. Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 10 degrees or above 30 degrees to ensure the health of the plants inside.
Ventilation and cleaning
To keep your terrarium healthy, it is important to ensure good ventilation. If the terrarium is closed, open the lid once every 7–10 days for 30 minutes to refresh the air and prevent mold. For open terrariums, especially those with succulents, never cover them, as they need dry air. Every 2–3 months, remove dry leaves or decaying parts with long tweezers and clean the inside of the glass with a soft, dry cloth when condensation allows.
Our final tip
Caring for a terrarium is a rewarding experience that requires only a little attention and love. Observe your plants and learn to recognize the signals they send you: over time, you will become an expert at keeping your small green ecosystem healthy and thriving.

- Light
- Bright indirect light · Place your terrarium in a bright room, but away from direct sunlight. The glass amplifies heat, and the leaves inside can burn within a few hours. An east- or north-facing window is perfect; a south-facing window works if the terrarium is 1–2 meters away.
- Watering
- 14 days in summer · 30 days in winter · Mist the substrate directly with low-mineral water (rainwater, distilled, or filtered). Never water with a stream: you risk water pooling at the bottom of the glass. · Observe the inner walls: if they are fogged up, the humidity is correct. If the glass is completely dry, add 2–3 sprays of room-temperature water with a mister. If water is running down heavily, open the lid (if closed) for 24 hours.
- Temperature
- 18°C ideal minimum · 24°C ideal maximum · 10°C tolerated minimum · 30°C tolerated maximum
- Humidity
- High inside the terrarium · 60% minimum · 90% maximum
- Fertilization
- No regular fertilization: the terrarium is a self-sustaining microenvironment. If you notice slower growth after 6–12 months, use half the recommended dose of liquid fertilizer for succulents (for succulent terrariums) or leafy plants (for tropical terrariums), diluted by an additional half. · Spring–summer · 90 days
- Propagation
- Not applicable · The terrarium is designed as a stable composition. When a plant grows too large, prune it or replace it.
