Strelitzia nicolai, also known as the “white bird of paradise”, is an evergreen perennial tree-like plant native to South Africa. At our nursery, we consider it one of the most fascinating plants thanks to its majestic leaves and ability to transform any room into a tropical paradise.

The right position

Strelitzia nicolai loves bright light and thrives beside a large sunny window. It is important for it to receive direct sunlight to grow at its best. If possible, place it somewhere it can enjoy plenty of natural light during the day.

When and how to water it

During spring and summer, it is essential to keep the compost consistently moist but never waterlogged. From the end of November, let the soil dry out between waterings. This will help the plant maintain an optimal water balance.

Temperature and humidity

Strelitzia nicolai prefers temperatures of at least 10°C and a highly humid environment. If the air is too dry, you can increase humidity by misting the leaves or using a humidifier.

The right fertilizer

During the growing season, in spring and summer, we recommend fertilizing your Strelitzia every 14 days with a liquid fertilizer for foliage plants. This will provide the nutrients needed for lush growth.

The pot and soil

For the growing medium, choose a peat-free compost enriched with grit to ensure good drainage. This type of soil will help prevent waterlogging, which could damage the roots.

How to propagate it

Strelitzia nicolai can be propagated by division or from seed. Dividing large clumps is recommended in early spring. If you choose to propagate from seed, bear in mind that the seeds may take months to germinate and 5 to 10 years to flower.
