How to care for your Sansevieria
Our tips for helping it grow healthy and strong
The Sansevieria, also known as the "mother-in-law's tongue", is a perennial plant in the Asparagaceae family, native to tropical West Africa. In our nursery, the Sansevieria is valued for its hardiness and ability to adapt to different environmental conditions, making it an ideal choice for both beginners and experts.
The right location
The Sansevieria prefers bright indirect light, but it can also tolerate low-light conditions. This makes it perfect for almost any corner of the home, including less brightly lit areas. However, for optimal growth, we recommend placing it in a well-lit area away from direct sunlight.
When and how to water it
Water your Sansevieria when the soil is completely dry. During the summer, this could mean watering every 7 days, while in winter, every 14 days will be sufficient. Check the soil moisture with your finger or a moisture meter to make sure you do not overwater it.
Temperature and humidity
The Sansevieria thrives in a temperature range between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius. It is important not to expose it to temperatures below 10 degrees. As for humidity, it prefers an environment with a moderate level, between 40% and 60%.
The right fertilizer
During the growing season, in spring and summer, we recommend fertilizing Sansevieria every 30 days with a balanced liquid fertilizer. This will help the plant maintain its vigor and beauty.
The pot and soil
Sansevieria needs well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging. A mix of all-purpose potting soil, sand, and perlite is ideal for ensuring good drainage. Make sure the pot has adequate drainage holes to prevent root rot.
How to propagate it
Sansevieria can be propagated by division or leaf cuttings. Propagation by leaf cuttings requires some patience, as the roots take time to develop. Division is a quicker and easier method for obtaining new plants.
Our final tip
Sansevieria is a low-maintenance plant that offers great rewards. Remember not to overwater it and place it in a bright spot to enjoy its beauty to the fullest. With this simple care, your Sansevieria will be a long-lasting and charming addition to your home.
