How to care for your Plumeria

How to care for your Plumeria

Our tips for growing it healthy and strong

Plumeria, also known as frangipani, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to tropical America. At our nursery, Plumeria is valued for its fragrant flowers and its ability to transform any space into a tropical paradise.

The right location

Plumeria loves light and thrives in a bright location with direct sunlight. Providing adequate exposure is important to encourage abundant flowering. If possible, place it somewhere where it can enjoy sunlight for most of the day.

When and how to water it

During the growing season, from spring to autumn, it is essential to water Plumeria when the soil feels dry to the touch. In winter, however, it is preferable to keep the plant dry and resume regular watering in mid-March.

Temperature and humidity

Plumeria prefers temperatures above 15°C. It is important to prevent temperatures from falling below this value to avoid problems such as tip rot. The plant tolerates low humidity well, making it suitable for drier climates as well.

The right fertilizer

For optimal growth, we recommend fertilizing Plumeria with a general-purpose liquid fertilizer for potted plants every 12 days, from April until the flowers open in August. This will help support flowering and the plant's overall health.

The pot and soil

Plumeria needs an open, free-draining substrate. An ideal mix could include peat-free John Innes No. 2 and a good amount of grit to improve drainage. Make sure the pot has adequate drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

How to propagate it

Plumeria is propagated through tip cuttings, a method of medium difficulty. We recommend taking cuttings between February and March, 10–15 cm long. Allow them to callus for 1–2 days before planting them in a fairly dry medium. Under good conditions, rooting takes about 4–6 weeks.

Our final tip

With the right care, Plumeria will reward you with spectacular blooms and an intoxicating fragrance. Remember to protect it from the cold and give it as much sunlight as possible. With a little attention, it will become the jewel of your garden or indoor space.
