The Ponytail Palm, also known as Beaucarnea recurvata, is a succulent plant native to Mexico. At our nursery, we appreciate it for its unique appearance and ability to adapt to different indoor environments. With its swollen trunk and thin, curved leaves, it adds an exotic and distinctive touch to any space.
The right location
The Ponytail Palm prefers bright, direct light, but it also adapts well to indirect light. Place it near a sunny window to ensure optimal growth. If direct light is not available, make sure it receives plenty of indirect light to maintain its vigor.
When and how to water it
Water your Ponytail Palm thoroughly, but let the soil dry out between waterings. In summer, watering every 7 days is sufficient, while in winter you can reduce the frequency to every 14 days. Always check that the soil is dry at least 2–3 cm below the surface before watering again.
Temperature and humidity
This plant thrives in an environment with temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius. It can tolerate minimum temperatures as low as 10 degrees, but it is important to keep it warm to avoid stress. Ideal humidity is around 40% to 60%, so an average home environment is perfect for it.
The right fertilizer
During spring and summer, we recommend fertilizing your Ponytail Palm every 30 days with a balanced liquid fertilizer. This will help support its growth and keep its foliage green and lush.
The pot and soil
Use well-draining soil made from sand and all-purpose potting soil to ensure proper water drainage. Repotting is not needed often, but you can do it when the plant becomes too large for its current pot.
How to propagate it
The Ponytail Palm can be propagated from shoot cuttings, a method that requires a little patience but can be very rewarding. Propagation is most effective when using the basal shoots that the plant naturally produces.
