The key turns in the lock, the door opens, and that stuffy smell typical of homes left empty for two weeks hits you. But your first thought is not about the suitcases or the accumulated mail: your gaze immediately goes there, to that green corner you had left with a hint of concern. And there it is. Your dried-out plant after vacation, with curled leaves, potting soil that looks like desert dust, and a dull color that cries out in distress. The guilt is immediate, almost physical. You wonder whether you should have watered it more, whether leaving that shutter half-closed was a fatal mistake, or whether the neighbor really did forget to stop by.


Before throwing it away or stubbornly trying to save it, there are five tests that can tell you in five minutes whether you have a living plant, one lying dormant, one hanging in the balance, or one you need to let go. It is not a matter of optimism, but of applied botany. In this article, I will not promise that everything can be saved. I will give you the tools to understand what you are dealing with and make a clear-headed decision, avoiding investing weeks of care in an organism that has already ceased its vital functions—or, conversely, throwing away a treasure that is simply waiting for the right signal to start growing again.

Why a plant may look dead without actually being dead

Water-stress-induced dormancy is a survival mechanism in which the plant halts its metabolism to protect the cambium (living tissue). A plant appears dead when leaf senescence is complete, but it remains alive as long as the internal conducting tissues maintain cell turgor.

We often confuse appearance with biological reality. When a plant suffers severe dehydration, it activates an emergency strategy called accelerated senescence. It sacrifices its leaves—the parts that consume the most energy and water through transpiration—in an attempt to keep its central core alive: the stem and roots. This state of “apparent death” is actually a form of forced dormancy.

Scientifically, everything revolves around the cambium, an extremely thin layer of meristematic cells located between the inner wood (xylem) and the outer bark (phloem). As long as the cambium is moist and green, the plant has the potential to produce new cells and, therefore, new shoots. If the cambium dries out and turns brown, the flow of nutrients is permanently interrupted. The distinction between a dormant and a dead plant lies precisely in the integrity of this layer, which is invisible from the outside.

In our daily work at I Giardini di Giulia, we classify plants upon return into four conditions: ALIVE (hydrated tissues but wilted leaves), DORMANT (leaves lost but living internal tissues), ON THE BRINK (partial damage to the conducting tissues), and BEYOND RECOVERY (total necrosis). Understanding which category your specimen falls into is the first step towards avoiding the waste of precious energy.

The 5 diagnostic tests (60 seconds each)

Perform the tests in this order, without skipping any. Each one adds a crucial piece to the puzzle of your plant’s survival.

  1. Scratch Test: Scrape the bark at the base.
  2. Flexibility Test: Bend the secondary branches.
  3. Root Inspection: Check the colour and consistency of the roots.
  4. Weight Test: Assess the weight of the pot to determine its water status.
  5. Root Collar Test: Check the firmness of the soil–stem junction.

Materials: Fingernails or a small disinfected cutter.

Timing: 5 minutes total.

Warnings: Do not force the branches excessively to avoid unnecessary breakage if the plant is healthy.

Test 1: The stem scratch test

It’s the ultimate diagnostic test. Take the main stem, ideally about 3–5 centimetres from the soil line. Use your fingernail or a small knife to scrape away a tiny section of bark, about one centimetre long. Don’t go deep; you only need to scratch the surface.

What to look for: If a bright green or moist cream color appears beneath the bark, the plant is alive. If, instead, you find a brown or gray color or a woody, powdery texture, that tissue is dead. If the result is ambiguous, repeat the test at two higher points: if you find green at the base but brown at the top, the plant is partially compromised but still has hope of regrowing from the bottom.

Test 2: The flexibility test (stems and branches)

Choose a secondary branch or the terminal part of the stem and bend it gently between your fingers. A living plant maintains a certain degree of cellular turgor thanks to the water stored in the cells’ vacuoles.

What it means: If the branch bends gently and, once released, tends to return (even slowly) to its original position, there is life. If, instead, you hear a distinct snap and the branch breaks like a dry matchstick, that branch is dead. If it bends but remains “floppy” without breaking, the plant is under advanced stress but is not yet necrotic.

Test 3: Root inspection (the decisive test)

This is the moment of truth. Often the above-ground part looks destroyed, but the beating heart underground is still intact. Tilt the pot sideways, place your hand on the surface of the soil while holding the stem between your fingers, and gently slide out the root ball. Never pull the plant by the stem if it resists.

What to look for: Healthy roots are generally white, yellowish, or light brown, and feel firm to the touch. If the roots are black, soft, slimy, and give off an unpleasant rotten smell, you are dealing with root rot (often caused by overwatering before leaving or by water collecting in the saucer). If, on the other hand, they are brown but dry and crumble like burnt paper, the dehydration is total. The root test is the one people skip most often because it is intimidating. It is also the one that gives you the clearest answer.

Test 4: The pot weight test

Lift the pot with one hand. The weight immediately tells you what is happening inside the substrate, beyond what you can see on the surface.

Interpretation: If the pot is incredibly light, almost as if it were empty, and you notice that the soil has pulled away from the sides of the pot, creating a gap, the plant is suffering from severe water deficit, but the roots may still be alive. If the pot is heavy but the plant is wilted, the problem is the opposite: the roots are waterlogged and can no longer transport oxygen and nutrients.

Test 5: The collar test

The crown is the transition zone between the roots and the stem. It is the most vulnerable point for many indoor plants. Touch it gently. If the base is firm and resists pressure, the supporting structure is intact. If, instead, the base feels soft, crumbles, or, worse, the stem comes completely away from the soil with a light touch, the prognosis is unfavorable: crown rot. In this case, the sap transport system is interrupted at the base, and there is no way to restore it.

Unfortunately, 40% are already beyond the point of no return. This is the procedure we follow in our laboratory before deciding whether or not to revive a struggling specimen.

The 4 diagnoses (and what to do for each)

The test results place your plant in one of four intervention categories: immediate recovery for healthy plants, strategic waiting for dormant plants, intensive treatment for those in critical condition, or responsible disposal for those beyond recovery.

Diagnosis 1: ALIVE BUT SUFFERING (recoverable in 2–4 weeks)

If the scratch test is green, the roots are light-colored and firm, and the crown is intact, your plant is simply extremely thirsty. The leaves are drooping because they have lost osmotic pressure (turgor), but the cells are intact.

What to do: Rehydrate it gradually. Do not flood the pot immediately; instead, immerse it halfway in room-temperature water for 15 minutes, then drain it thoroughly. For the complete, step-by-step recovery protocol, read our guide to reviving plants after returning from vacation.

Diagnosis 2: DORMANT (wait 4–8 weeks)

The plant has lost all its leaves or they have turned completely yellow, but the scratch test at the base is still green and the roots, although sparse, are not rotten. The plant has entered energy-saving mode.

What to do: Prune the dry and dead parts back to the living tissue (the green part). Reduce watering to the bare minimum, since without leaves the plant does not transpire and uses very little water. Place it somewhere with indirect light and do not fertilize under any circumstances. Stress-induced dormancy is not programmed: the plant has gone “on pause” to avoid dying. It may start growing again, but in its own time.

Diagnosis 3: ON THE FENCE (50/50—decide how much time you want to invest)

This is the most frustrating situation. The scratch test shows green areas alternating with brown areas; some roots are soft and others firm. The crown is dark but has not yet disintegrated.

What to do: Surgical intervention is necessary. Remove all rotten roots, clean the crown thoroughly, and repot it in fresh, dry substrate. Prune the foliage drastically to balance the loss of roots. Set yourself a limit: 30 days. If you see no small signs of revival after a month, or if the rot continues, accept Diagnosis 4.

Diagnosis 4: BEYOND RECOVERY (accept it and clear the space)

Brown everywhere on the scratch test, roots falling apart between your fingers, and a soft, foul-smelling crown. The plant is biologically dead. Persisting in watering it will only attract fungus gnats and fungi that could infect the other healthy plants in your home.

What to do: Empty the pot, discard the plant and soil (never recycle it, as it may contain pathogens). Disinfect the pot with a solution of 5% water and bleach or white vinegar before reusing it. Accepting the loss is part of every plant lover’s journey.

The 3 mistakes that make diagnosis impossible

Avoiding impulsive actions is essential to prevent altering the plant’s biological signals. Watering unnecessarily or exposing it to direct sunlight can turn a dormant plant into a dead one in less than 24 hours.

  • Watering before diagnosing: If the plant is suffering from root rot, adding water is like pouring gasoline on a fire. Check the roots first, then decide whether to water it.
  • Cut everything back immediately: Without performing the scratch test, you risk cutting branches that are still viable and could regrow. Pruning should be guided by diagnosis, not by the plant’s current appearance.
  • Move it into direct sunlight: Many people think sunlight helps “revive” a plant. On the contrary, a dehydrated or stressed plant cannot withstand the thermal shock and direct solar radiation, which would end up cooking the remaining tissues.

What to do (really) when you have to throw it away

Not every plant can be saved, and that’s okay. It happens to us at the nursery too: sometimes a combination of environmental factors makes recovery impossible. Don’t see it as a personal failure or as proof that you don’t have a green thumb. A plant’s death is an opportunity to learn something about your home’s microclimate and your habits.

Dispose of the plant in the green-waste or organic-waste bin (if there are no obvious pests). If the plant died from drying out, the potting soil can be mixed into compost, but if you suspect root rot, it’s better to dispose of it. Once you’ve cleaned the pot, don’t leave it empty for too long. If this experience has put you off, choose a more resilient replacement. Some plants tolerate prolonged absences and can go three weeks without a drop of water without batting an eyelid, such as Sansevieria or Zamioculcas.

The extra test: preventing it next time

Diagnosis is a remedy, but prevention is the real solution. Before your next trip, plan how you’ll manage watering. Simple methods include ceramic watering cones, inverted bottles, or, for those with many plants, small indoor automatic irrigation systems.
