Plants for small spaces: how to furnish a studio or one-bedroom apartment with the right greenery

You have 42 square meters and the only free corner is between the sofa and the window, or a small windowsill just waiting to be enhanced? I completely understand the feeling: you love design, you want greenery in your home, but the fear of choosing the wrong plants and ruining the balance of your space is strong. Yet, even in a studio or one-bedroom apartment, plants for small spaces can work miracles, bringing life and style without cluttering.

It's not just about aesthetics, but about creating a healthier and more welcoming environment. In this article, born from the experience gained in our nursery, I will introduce you to 12 ideal plants and 5 space-saving interior design solutions. I will show you how to choose the right greenery, room by room, and give you practical tips to avoid common mistakes, transforming your small apartment into a true urban jungle, albeit in miniature.

Key Points

  • Targeted selection — Opt for vertical-growing, hanging, or mini plants that maximize the green effect without taking up valuable floor space.
  • Vertical design — Utilize shelves, walls, and ceilings to place plants, freeing up horizontal surfaces and creating visual depth.
  • Light is crucial — Carefully assess the light exposure of each corner before choosing a plant; it is the main limiting factor.
  • Smart pots — Choose tall and narrow containers or cache-pots that integrate into the design and support plant growth without cluttering.
  • Less is more — Better one or two large, scenic plants than many small, cluttered ones, for a more harmonious and less chaotic effect.

In a small apartment, plants that grow vertically (Sansevieria, Zamioculcas, Dracaena), hanging plants for shelves (Pothos, Hoya, Philodendron scandens), and compact desk species (Peperomia, Haworthia, Fittonia) work best. The rule: occupy vertical volume, not floor space.

Three green rules for small spaces: before choosing a plant

When space is limited, every choice counts. It's not just about selecting a plant that physically fits in a corner, but about understanding how it will interact with its surroundings. In our nursery, we've learned that there are three fundamental principles for successful greenery in a studio or one-bedroom apartment.

In a small space, the best plants are those that grow tall and not wide: Sansevieria, Zamioculcas, and Dracaena occupy less than 30 cm of base but reach over a meter, providing a scenic presence without stealing floor space.

1. Think in vertical volumes, not square meters of floor space

The first golden rule is to look up. Your apartment has a ceiling, walls, shelves. Space is not just walkable area. Plants that grow tall or hang elegantly are your best allies. Imagine a Sansevieria soaring upwards or a Pothos cascading from a shelf: they take up very little floor space but fill the vertical volume with their presence.

2. One large, scenic plant beats five small scattered ones

It's often thought that only tiny plants belong in a small space. In reality, a single medium or large plant, strategically placed, can create a powerful focal point and make the room appear larger. Conversely, many small scattered plants can create a sense of clutter and crowdedness. Choose a 1.5-meter tall Dracaena marginata, for example, rather than five 20 cm plants.

3. Natural light is the real limit, not space

Before falling in love with a plant, observe the light in your apartment. How many hours of direct sun does each corner receive? Is there indirect but constant light? Many indoor plants survive with low light, but few truly thrive without adequate illumination. Don't force a sun-loving species into a dark corner; instead, choose a plant that naturally adapts to that condition. This will save you many disappointments.
